If your ideal weekend includes swaying palms, warm ocean breezes and not checking your emails until Monday, Port Douglas might just be your happy place.
Nestled where the rainforest meets the reef, this tropical town invites you to slow down. Spend your mornings exploring the Great Barrier Reef, your afternoons wandering boutique-lined streets or chasing waterfalls, and your evenings lingering over fresh seafood as the sun sets over the Coral Sea. Here's how we'd spend the perfect weekend in Port Douglas.
Friday Afternoon
Arrive, check into your accommodation and ease straight into holiday mode.
Stretch your legs with a walk along Four Mile Beach, where the palm trees lean towards the ocean and the pace of life instantly slows. Afterwards, wander Macrossan Street, popping into local boutiques before finding a spot for sunset drinks. There's no rush here. That's kind of the point.
Saturday
Today is all about choosing your own adventure.
Head out to the Great Barrier Reef for a day of snorkelling or diving amongst vibrant coral and tropical fish or swap the ocean for the ancient beauty of the Daintree Rainforest.
If you're driving north, don't miss a stop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company, where the flavours are made from fruit grown on the property. Think mango, coconut, wattleseed and whatever else is in season. It tastes even better after a rainforest walk.
On your way back, call into Mossman Gorge for crystal-clear swimming holes and one of the most beautiful rainforest walks in Australia. By evening, it's time for a long dinner, a glass of wine and nowhere else to be.
Sunday
Sleep in. Grab a coffee and breakfast, browse the Sunday markets (if you're visiting on the right weekend), then find a shady spot by the pool or beach with the book you've been meaning to finish. Sometimes the best part of a holiday is giving yourself permission to do absolutely nothing.
